Do I set my Monkey free?*

I was visiting the fam and got rolling on my Sockapalooza socks:

The yarn (Lorna's Laces in Icehouse) is knitting up beautifully--no pooling or spiraling to speak of.

Monkey #1: done to the toe. I didn't have my pal's measurements with me, and wanted to double check before I started on the toe, to make sure the foot is the right length.

Monkey #2: cast on and the ribbing is started. I (with the rest of the blogosphere!) really, really, really like this pattern.

But that leads me to my dilemma: my pal has, it seems, also gotten bitten by the Monkey bug, a fact that I didn't learn until I was pretty committed to the pattern. I'm wondering if I shouldn't make a different pair of socks for my pal, and keep the Monkeys for me (which has nothing-what-so-ever to do with the fact that I love love love these socks.)

What would you do? I'm going to finish the socks, but should I
  • A. send them to my pal when I know that she's made a pair of Monkeys already and pat myself on the back for anticipating her tastes so well, or
  • B. keep them for myself (or maybe as a "hurray! one Christmas present done! kind of a thing) and make an entirely new pair for her?
Help!

*I have George Michaels stuck in my head every time I pick these socks up!

Everyone seems to love the monkeys so much, I think I would send them to your sockpal anyway. It's such a popular sock I'm guessing this is going to happen more than once.

I would send them to your pal anyways. They are gorgeous. Chalk it up to knowing your pal so well. I know that I am knitting a pair of Monkeys for my pal that if the pal that were knitting for me were to do the same, I would be in seventh heaven! There are a lot more monkey's in my future. I absolutely love this pattern!

I vote that you keep them - not because your pal wouldn't like 'em, I'm sure she will, but because they are really nice socks and if you like them yourself ... :)~

Well, I would never deny you the right to keep them...but on the flip side, I love Jaywalkers and have knit 6 pairs...so I say this to you "If she loves it, chances are she would love a second pair twice as much."
Either way, someone will love them!

The question is, how stressful would it be to make another pair before Aug 2? If you are an obsessed sock knitter (like me) and make several pairs a month, put them on stitch markers and finish them later for yourself, then do something new for your pal. If it will cause ANY stress to try to get a second pair then just finish these and send. Monkeys are the latest hot sock pattern so I can't imagine having too many pairs. Besides, it will be cool to compare how they come out made by two different knitters!!

Well, if I were you, I would finish the Monkeys, since you're about halfway there. And if I had the time and motivation after the Monkeys were done, I would start a new pair for my pal, and keep the monkeys as backup incase I run out of time. It looks like you and your pal have pretty close foot sizes so neither pair would go to waste...
Or I wouldn't worry about it and just keep knitting the Monkeys...either way, I would finish the Monkeys first and then decide...

This is the EXACT reason I didn't knit Monkeys for my pal...I wanted to so bad, but I thought "you know what, between now and august, she's probably going to knit them for herself since everyone else is!" so I chose a different pattern and I figured I'd knit Monkeys for myself. If it were me, I'd keep 'em! Also, I am super impressed that you managed to not suffer any pooling with that Lorna's Laces! I thought LL always pooled!
